James Hushagen (Hoose-hog-in), Edgewood, WA, has been a member of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Board of Directors and its predecessors since 1995. Hushagen serves as a member of the Governance and Investment Committees of the board.
Hushagen is an attorney and member in the law firm of Eisenhower & Carlson, PLLC. In this role, he chaired the firm's executive committee and its associate development committee, currently he chairs the firm's financial services group and serves as legal counsel in complex commercial transactions involving banking, business, real estate and employment.
Hushagen graduated with honors from Pacific Lutheran University with a B.A. in history. He studied for a year at Yale Divinity School and returned to PLU for an M.A. in social sciences. He received his J.D. from the University of Puget Sound Law School, where he graduated with honors.
Before starting his legal career, Hushagen worked with three law-related human service programs.
Hushagen is a member of the American Bar Association, the Washington State Bar Association and the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker on topics relating to law and commercial lending and is the author of several legal articles.
Hushagen is active in the community. Prior to becoming an attorney, he was president of the District Court Citizens Board, founded the state Pretrial Diversion Task Force and served on the Community Corrections Board of the State Council on Crime and Delinquency.
He currently chairs the board of directors of the Lutheran Music Program, home of Lutheran Summer Music. He is general counsel to Holden Village and formerly served as general counsel to Good Samaritan Hospital, a Lutheran hospital in Puyallup, WA. In addition, he serves as an officer on the board of regents for Pacific Lutheran University, as well as past president of the PLU alumni association and committee to select the PLU president. He is vice president of the Southwestern Washington Synod of the ELCA and serves on the Region 1 Governing Council.
A member of Mountain View Lutheran Church in Puyallup, Hushagen has served as congregational president, member of the church council and on numerous committees. He has also served as a Lutheran Brotherhood fraternal communicator and as vice president of the Rainier Branch.
Hushagen and his wife, Debbie, have two sons.
