Navigating Emotionally & Spiritually

During a time of job loss, you may experience a mix of emotions – frustration, fear, helplessness, confusion and so many more. After all, job loss is a loss.

The book, A Time to Mourn, A Time to Dance: Help for the Losses in Life, has helped many Thrivent Financial members and their families. Read an excerpt from the book regarding job loss. (PDF, 115K)

Lifting Your Spirits

While it may feel natural to withdraw, reaching out to others and creating positive and meaningful experiences for yourself is important. It can help you keep your spirits lifted and help inspire you during this transition.

  • Share and receive support and connections with others on the Lutherans Online Just Among Friends message board thread about job transition.
  • Send an eCard with a message of encouragement to someone you know who is experiencing job loss.
  • Does your church or one in your area have a ministry for job seekers? If so, get involved. If you can't find a support group, talk to your church leaders about creating one.
  • Find spiritual resources available through your church like worship, prayer, Bible study, and talking with your pastor.

Who Am I Now?

Often, our self-identity is closely tied to our careers. A period of job transition can allow for greater understanding of yourself. It can also provide opportunities to use your skills in different ways, such as greater involvement with your church or through volunteerism.

Discover or rediscover your God-given spiritual gifts through a Spiritual Gifts Assessment. Two Lutheran church bodies have them available on their websites:

This break in your professional life can provide a rare opportunity to focus on the other things that matter – for example, your faith, family, friends, health, education or helping others. What's most important to you? Use this values exercise (PDF, 58K) to find out.
